How to Become a Christian

It's not by accident that you are here. God loves you and wants to have a personal relationship with you through Jesus, His Son. But, there is just one thing that separates us from God. That one thing is sin. The Bible describes sin in many ways, but put simply, it is our failure to measure up to the standards of a holy and righteous God. We sin by things we do, choices we make, attitudes we show, thoughts we entertain, and also by not doing what is right.

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23

No matter how good of a person we try to be, none of us can ever do the right thing all the time. "There is no one righteous, not even one." Romans 3:10. God says that every person who has ever lived is a sinner and any sin separates us from God. So it does not matter if we believe we are good people we are all sinners, including you and me.

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 6:23

Disobedience to an infinite eternal God deserves an infinite eternal consequence. No good judge would let the guilty go free, the criminal go unpunished. Neither can a holy righteous God allow sinful man to go unpunished. The penalty for your sin must be paid, but God loves us so much He sent His Son, Jesus, to pay that debt for you when He died on the cross.

"But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!" Romans 5:8

"For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16. Jesus paid the price for your sin and mine by giving His life on a cross at a place called Calvary, just outside of the city walls of Jerusalem in ancient Israel. While He died on the cross, He was mocked, spit upon, and cursed. Yet Jesus cried out, "Father, forgive them, because they do not know what they are doing." Luke 23:34. With such love, Jesus died in your place knowing every evil act, word, and thought you would commit. God then brought Jesus back from the dead and provided the way for you to have a personal relationship with Him through His Son.

"If you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation." Romans 10:9-10

Many people have different views about the way to God. Some think they will be punished or rewarded according to how good they are. Some find it hard to understand how Jesus could love them when other people don't seem to. Others think they have to make things right in their lives before they can come to God. "For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift—not from works, so that no one can boast." Ephesians 2:8-9. It's God's grace that allows you to come to Him, not your efforts to clean up your life or work your way to Heaven. You can't earn it.

You and I can be saved only by confessing our sins and placing our faith in Jesus Christ. We must also surrender our life to His Lordship by placing Him in charge of every area of our life. Both John the Baptist and Jesus Himself began their preaching with the word, 'Repent'. "From then on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near!" Matthew 4:17. To repent means to change one’s mind or to turn to go in another direction. To admit we are sinners means turning away from our sin and selfishness and turning to follow Jesus.

"For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." Romans 10:13

God promises that "to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God." John 1:12. Yes, God does hear and accept ALL who come to put their faith in Him. There is no need to fear death any longer because Jesus broke the power of death on the cross with His own blood. The price has been paid in full and it is God’s promise to receive all who come to Him. He is willing to do this not because of anything you can offer Him, but just because He loves you.

If it is your sincere desire to receive Jesus into your heart as your personal Lord and Savior, tell God that you are willing to trust Him for salvation. You can tell Him in your own words or use this simple prayer:

"Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and I do not deserve eternal life. But, I believe You died and rose from the grave to make me a new creation and to prepare me to dwell in Your presence forever. Jesus, come into my life, take control of my life, forgive my sins and save me. I am now placing my trust in You alone for my salvation and I accept Your free gift of eternal life."
